About

I’m Ian Joyner, a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager who has worked in flood risk management in both the private and public sector since 2004. I founded Poppleford Consulting Limited to provide independent advice to help property and planning clients make better decisions about land and property at risk of flooding.

I have worked for major civil engineering consultancies and the Environment Agency, and as part of those roles spent time seconded to and advising Lead Local Flood Authorities. In 2014, I established a UK flood risk service line at a global property services company, providing investment and development advice over four years to some of the world’s major real estate institutions and raising the profile of flood risk for those managing and investing in land and property.

As an independent consultant, I strive to do things differently to many in the market. Unlike traditional service providers, the demands for bigger and longer-term projects do not impact the effectiveness or timeliness of the personal advice I enjoy providing to my clients.

My career has been defined by my passion for helping people and businesses at risk of flooding. Visiting flooded homes and businesses and seeing the hardship flooding can bring convinces me that the best approach to manage exposure to flooding is to avoid areas at risk in the first place. Drawing on years of experience developing and applying flood risk models and data, I work hard to break down complex flood risk scenarios for the benefit of those considering investing their success in land which may flood.
